ChatGPT Work turns the AI seat into a workflow decision

The new agent can work across connected apps, local files, and long-running tasks. The useful question is whether it removes a real handoff, not whether the demo looks impressive.

Short answer

ChatGPT Work is a distinct mode for longer, multi-step work and finished deliverables. It can use connected apps, browser context, scheduled tasks, and, with permission on desktop, local files and apps. That makes it less like another chat window and more like an execution layer across the stack. The sensible rollout is one measurable workflow at a time, with access and review rules set before the agent touches sensitive systems.

What changed

  • OpenAI introduced Work as a separate ChatGPT mode for longer projects, multi-step tasks, and finished materials such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and Sites.
  • Plugins can connect business context from email, calendars, file storage, chat, CRMs, project trackers, and other tools.
  • Scheduled Tasks can run once, repeat on a schedule or trigger, or monitor for changes while the user reviews progress and approves important actions.
  • The desktop app can use local files and desktop apps when permission is granted, while web and mobile Work run in the cloud.
  • Work follows the same usage structure as Codex, so longer or more complex tasks can consume more of the plan’s included usage.

Who should care

Lean teams with recurring cross-app work should care first: reporting, sales preparation, content production, research synthesis, and routine operating reviews. Teams without a stable process, clear data ownership, or a reviewer will mostly create a faster way to produce inconsistent work.

Cost or access effect

The seat price is only part of the cost. Included usage varies by plan and task complexity, and additional credits may be needed. Review time, plugin permissions, failure recovery, and the tools a successful workflow can actually replace belong in the business case.

What it does not change

ChatGPT Work does not become the system of record for your CRM, accounting, projects, or files. It does not remove accountability for errors, permissions, or sensitive actions. Connecting more systems increases what the agent can help with, but also raises the cost of weak access controls and casual review.

Action checklist

  1. Choose one recurring workflow with a clear owner, input, output, and time cost.
  2. Define which apps, folders, and records the task genuinely needs before connecting them.
  3. Use test data or a low-risk workflow until the output and failure modes are understood.
  4. Require human approval before sending, publishing, purchasing, deleting, or changing sensitive records.
  5. Track hours saved, correction time, usage consumed, and any tool or handoff the workflow replaces.
  6. Expand access only after the first workflow is reliable and the economics are clear.

Worthd call

Do not buy the story that every task should become agentic. Buy back one painful handoff. If ChatGPT Work can complete it reliably, with narrow permissions and less total effort, it earns a wider role. If it only creates drafts that need heavy repair, keep the scope small.
