Worthd card-fee check for trades shops

Getting paid without losing 3% to card fees

A 3 to 10 person HVAC, plumbing or electrical shop that sends $20,000 a month in invoices. What a bank transfer costs in Jobber, Housecall Pro, Square, Stripe and Melio, and what that is worth in a year.

The short answer

A bank transfer costs 1% in Jobber and Housecall Pro against 2.9% + 30 cents for a card. On $20,000 a month in $800 invoices, that is $200 against $587.50.

Moving all of it saves $387.50 a month, $4,650 a year. Moving 10 of 25 invoices saves $155 a month. The caps are what separate the tools on big jobs: an $8,000 install costs $80 by bank in Jobber, $10 on Square Invoices Plus, $5 on Stripe and nothing listed on Melio.

Fee per invoice

What one bank transfer costs, by tool

ToolBank (ACH) fee$800 invoice$8,000 invoice
Card at Jobber's rate (for comparison)2.9% + 30 cents$23.50$232.30
Jobber Payments1%, no cap stated$8.00$80.00
Housecall Pro1%, no cap stated$8.00$80.00
Square Invoices (standard)1%, $1 minimum, no cap stated$8.00$80.00
Square Invoices Plus1%, $10 cap per transfer$8.00$10.00
Stripe0.8%, $5 cap$6.40$5.00
Melio (payment received)Listed as free$0$0

Worthd arithmetic from published rates, before tax. Housecall Pro lists card rates "as low as 2.59%", so its card fee on $800 can be lower than the $23.50 shown. Square's Plus monthly price was not on the page Worthd read, so it is not counted. Instant payouts cost extra: Jobber lists 1%.

A month and a year

$20,000 a month in 25 invoices of $800

How customers payFees per monthPer year
All 25 by card (2.9% + 30 cents)$587.50$7,050
15 by card, 10 by bank transfer at 1%$432.50$5,190
All 25 by bank transfer at 1%$200.00$2,400

Check: 25 x $23.50 = $587.50. 15 x $23.50 = $352.50, plus 10 x $8.00 = $80, is $432.50. 25 x $8.00 = $200. Real savings are lower because debit, check and cash payers already cost less and some customers will not switch.

Where Melio fits

Free to receive by bank, but not a field service tool

Melio's pricing page lists a bank payment received as free, and a card payment received as 2.9% that you or your customer can cover. There is no 30 cent add-on listed, so a card is about the same cost as in Jobber. The plans differ on free ACH payments a month (Go 5, Core 20, Boost 50, Unlimited unlimited), and Melio's page says $0.50 is charged on each payment after that; it does not say whether the counts apply to payments you receive, so ask before you route a month of invoices through it. At 25 invoices a month on the free plan that could be $10 a month, still far below Jobber's 1%. Core is $25 a month ($20 on annual billing).

Melio is built to pay bills and send payment requests, not to run jobs. Worthd found no Jobber or Housecall Pro integration on its page, and Jobber's QuickBooks sync page does not mention it. If a customer pays through Melio, the Jobber invoice will not show it unless you mark it paid yourself. That is a worthwhile trade on a few large invoices a month and a poor one on 25 small ones.

What it takes in practice

How to get customers onto the 1% route

  • Put the bank option on big invoices first. The saving is the fee difference times the invoice: $152.30 on one $8,000 job against $15.50 on an $800 one.
  • Check your cap. If most of your volume is jobs over $2,000, Stripe's $5 cap and Square Plus's $10 cap beat Jobber's and Housecall Pro's uncapped 1%, but you give up their job records and scheduling.
  • A surcharge is the other lever. Housecall Pro caps one at 3%; Jobber has no setting. See the card-fee surcharging page for the state and card-network limits.
Who this is wrong for

Skip the switch if

  • Your customers are mostly homeowners paying a small invoice on the spot by phone: they pay by card and will not set up a bank link for $15.
  • You work from Jobber or Housecall Pro all day: a payment taken outside it costs you a manual step on every invoice.
  • You already pass the card fee on with a surcharge, which can bring card cost close to zero in states that allow it.
Questions owners ask

FAQ

What does it cost to take a bank transfer instead of a card in Jobber or Housecall Pro?

Jobber lists bank payments (ACH) at 1% in the US, against 2.9% + 30 cents for a card. Housecall Pro lists 1% for bank payments and card rates starting at 2.59%. On an $800 invoice that is $8.00 by bank against $23.50 by card at Jobber's rate. Neither page states a cap, so an $8,000 job is $80 by bank.

Which tool has the cheapest bank transfer fee for a contractor?

Of the published rates Worthd read on Oct 11, 2026: Melio lists receiving an ACH payment as free, Stripe 0.8% capped at $5, Square Invoices Plus 1% capped at $10 (Square's standard rate is 1% with a $1 minimum and no cap stated), Jobber and Housecall Pro 1% with no cap stated. The cap matters on big jobs: on an $8,000 invoice that is $5 at Stripe, $10 on Square Plus and $80 at Jobber.

Does Melio charge to receive a payment from a customer?

Melio's pricing page lists a bank (ACH) payment received as free and a credit card payment received as 2.9%, which you or your customer can cover. There is no 30 cent add-on listed, so a card payment costs about the same as in Jobber, not less.

Is getting paid through Melio the same as getting paid in Jobber?

No. Melio is a bill-pay and payment-request tool. Worthd found no Jobber or Housecall Pro integration on Melio's pricing page, which lists QuickBooks and Xero sync only, and Jobber's QuickBooks sync page does not mention Melio. A payment taken in Melio is not recorded against the Jobber invoice by itself, so you would mark the invoice paid by hand. Confirm this with both vendors before you rely on it.

Can I charge customers extra for paying by card instead?

Sometimes. Housecall Pro has a built-in surcharge up to 3%, Jobber has no setting, and debit cards can never be surcharged. Connecticut, Maine and Massachusetts do not allow it. The Worthd card-fee surcharging page has the details by tool.

How much do I save moving 10 of 25 monthly invoices to bank transfer?

On 25 invoices of $800, all by card at 2.9% + 30 cents, the card fees are $587.50 a month. With 15 on card and 10 by bank transfer at 1%, they are $432.50, which is $155 a month and $1,860 a year saved. Debit cards, check and cash payers already cost less, so your own saving will be smaller.

What was not verified

Whether Melio's free-ACH plan limits (and the $0.50 per payment after them) apply to payments received, any Jobber or Housecall Pro cap on bank payments (neither page states one), Square Invoices Plus's monthly price, and QuickBooks Payments' current bank-transfer rate, which the QuickBooks pricing page does not publish (a 2022 community answer says 1% with a $10 cap, so Worthd left it out of the table). Card rates other than Jobber's are not used in the worked totals.
